I love my 4yr old, Koa, very much. But he’s got a voice that it tuned specifially to drive my ears nuts when we’re in the car. Just something about the angle and proximity I guess. Sometimes when he gets excited, I have to plug my right ear with my finger. It’s really that bad. What I really need is a cone of silence a la Get Smart! for either Koa, or myself. They can’t be that expensive, can they? It may be a good DIY project…

Yesterday I built a simple compost bin using instructions I found at Stopwaste.org. I went with the one made from a 32 gallon plastic garbage can. I spent about $20 at Home Depot to buy everything, and it took about 15 minutes to build it, plus another 10 minutes to dig a small hole in the lawn to put it in. We already have some kitchen scraps in it, just stuff like corn cobs, onion peel, coffee grounds and banana peels. I also added in some dried leaves and newspaper. This week I’ll ask our lawn mowing service to save us all the grass clippings so we can use those in the compost bin. I am already thinking that we will need another bin, but it was so easy to make, I am not worried. Just can’t wait to see all the waste turn into compost that we can use in the garden!

Today I go in for jury duty. It’s my first one ever. Sure, I have received summons a few times before, but I always had a reason I couldn’t make it. The first time, was when I was studying at UCI, the next time I was living in Japan, and the last time, I got a summons for Los Angeles County, but I was in Austin. Finally, I get to go! I am actually pretty excited, since I have never been. Plus (and it might sound cliche) it’s a citizen’s duty to serve in a courtroom. I heard there is a lot of waiting around, and I might not even get to sit on a jury, but I am still looking forward to going. The courthouse is only about 5 minutes away by car too. The only thing I have to decide on is if I take a book, DS, iPod, or a combination of the three.

A few weeks ago I was shoveling some dirt in our yard, and I injured my wrist. I was twisting the handle of the shovel back and forth so that the dirt would fall off the sides in sort of an even fashion. My wrist felt fine that day, but the following morning, it was really sore. In fact, the forearm was pretty much hurting as well. I couldn’t flex my wrist backwards or forwards very far at all, and I couldn’t apply very much pressure with my fingers. Throughout the following week, it got better, but then on the weekend, I picked up Koa to give him a time-out, and re injured the wrist. Another week of healing went by until Koa needed another time-out, and yes, I hurt my wrist again! This time, it was really painful. So painful, that I decided to get a wrist brace from the drug store. I have been wearing it for the past few days, and it really helps! My wrist is getting better much more quickly. I guess all those small tweaks I used to accidentally give my wrist have been minimized, so the healing can go without any setbacks.

A few times I have wondered if there are any vitamins I could take that would help out. And then I would always think about MLB players and the banned drugs they use, or should I say used. I have a better understanding of why someone would do that now, in order to recover from injury quicker and get back in the lineup.
